What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is a chronic infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Without treatment, it can lead to:

  • Gum recession
  • Bone loss
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Increased risk for systemic health conditions

The good news? Gum disease is treatable and manageable, especially when detected early.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

You may benefit from a periodontal evaluation if you notice:

Bleeding when brushing or flossing
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath
Gum recession or longer-looking teeth
Teeth that feel loose or sensitive

Many dental patients are surprised to learn these are not normal and that comfortable treatment options are available.

Meet Our Periodontist

Dr. Ning Yu, DMD

I grew up in Handan, a northern city in China, and earned my dental degree from China Medical University in Shenyang. I later completed my periodontal training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I was honored with the Orban Award from the American Association of Periodontology for excellence in research. My family and I eventually made our way to New England, drawn by the beauty of the four seasons and the warm, welcoming communities.

I’m passionate about the long-term connections I build with patients and believe in delivering care that’s both expert and compassionate. I joined Spoonwood Dental because of the incredible team and supportive environment, and I’m excited to explore more of the Monadnock region, especially the hiking trails!

Outside of dentistry, I enjoy reading non-fiction, running 5Ks, and relaxing with a good book by the pool. My daughter Emma, a rising third grader, keeps me busy with her love of soccer, swimming, and guitar. My husband Mao, is a scientist in cancer research.
